Wood & Water Table
Ian's inspiraton behind the piece
After acquiring a small 6 board log of burr elm I chose the 3 most detailed burr boards. I decided the only way to create the top without losing any of the natural beauty of the boards was to try to achieve a top with natural joints instead of a mechanical, clean straight glue joint, which would have lost some of the character of the wane edge and the pure burr running through it. Once laying the 3 boards together in their most natural form they created what looked like ravines, giving me the idea they should have water running through them. These are both natural elements so it worked well.
I sourced high grade clear cast resin and blue pigment dyes used to colour this with. Sand was used as a base prior to resin pours with crushed quartz to disguise the oak dovetail keys used to hold the burr elm boards together. Finally, the resin was flattened off and highly polished to give a glass finish.
